Skyline Homes is a family company. It was founded by a man who arrived with nothing, it was built on a reputation he never once let slip, and it's now being carried forward by his sons.
Rafael "Ray" Fernandez came to the United States from Cuba with nothing. There was a time when he didn't have a home of his own. Everything that followed was built from that starting point.
Ray became an air traffic controller and earned many awards for his dedication to the flying public. On his days off, he bought "fixer-uppers," rebuilt them with his own hands and began building small new homes, keeping them as rentals.
Ray walked out with his fellow controllers in the 1981 air traffic controllers' strike and was fired by President Ronald Reagan. He didn't look back. He qualified for his contractor's license and turned his weekend work into a career.
Ray founded a general contracting and remodeling company. Over the years it remodeled hundreds of homes, built room additions and multimillion-dollar custom homes, built production homes in Ontario, Highland and Beaumont and an apartment community in Upland, and rebuilt restaurants and fire-damaged properties.
When Ray and his wife, Esther, moved to Skyline Drive in La Habra Heights, the company took the name it carries today.
Ray and Esther, the company's vice president, were inducted together into the Baldy View Chapter Hall of Fame of the Building Industry Association.
Steven Fernandez has taken over Skyline Homes, working alongside his brother, Ray Fernandez, the broker and owner of Next Move Real Estate. Both grew up on these job sites. Together they're taking the company into large-scale land development, partnering with landowners across Southern California.
Ray served at the highest levels of the homebuilding industry. He was President of the Los Angeles County East Chapter, the Baldy View Chapter and the Building Industry Association of Southern California. He then spent four years as California's State Representative to the National Association of Home Builders and two years on its Executive Committee as National Vice President for California and Hawaii.
In its first twenty-six years, not a single complaint was filed against the company with the Contractors State License Board or any other agency, and no legal action was ever brought against it or its owner.
That's the standard we inherited, and the one we intend to keep
